France aiming to rebound at FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series in Ekaterinburg after shock home loss

EKATERINBURG (Russia) – Powerhouse France will be aiming to rediscover their winning ways at the fourth stop of the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series 2019 in Ekaterinburg, Russia, on July 9-10, 2019.

The No.1 seeds were hot favorites to win last week’s third stop at home in Poitiers but were stunned by the Czech Republic 21-20 in a thrilling semi-final. Despite that setback, Les Bleues still sit at the top of the Women’s Series standings well clear of second placed Canada having triumphed at the second stop in Turin.

The FIBA 3x3 World Cup bronze medalists remain loaded with talent and boast three of the top four ranked players in the world headlined by No.1 Migna Touré.

Czech Republic, France’s conqueror, will be looking to continue the momentum and are once again the No.6 seeds – just like they were in Poitiers. They also beat World Cup 2018 winners Italy and Canada en route to the title.

Playmaker Kristýna Minarovičová led the team in scoring in Poitiers and was the hero during the nail-biting final.

No.2 seeds Hungary loom as a major threat after a fairy tale World Cup where they finished runners-up to China and stunned France in the semi-final. Dóra Medgyessy was outstanding in Amsterdam and the heroin in her team’s memorable quarter-final victory over Spain. She will be a key for her team in Ekaterinburg along with World Cup Team of the Tournament member Cyesha Goree.

 Mongolia and the USA round out the top four seeds in the eight-team tournament.

The new Women’s Series sees teams representing their national federation and 8-12 events are expected to take place this year. There are more than 8 teams participating at the Women's Series meaning that the teams are different at each event. They qualify for individual stops based on the number of events they have already been allocated to and their team ranking.
